The ducklings are growing fast. Everyone said they would. But I’m still astonished. They are only a week old and I do think they’ve doubled in size. Their warm little bodies are all substantial and stuff!
They’ve adjusted to their new habitat very well.
Personality updates
The brains
Chocolate Chip (the magpie duck) is by far showing to be the smartest and bravest. Her sisters continue to follow and copy her, so I think they’re getting a great education. Whenever there is a sound, she looks up with half her eye, and I swear there’s a glint in there—like “come at me Owls and Hawks. Make My Day.”
But no one’s day will be made because no predators allowed here at Sherwood house!
The beauty
Blue Echoa Eboa is just pretty as a picture. She has the softest little face, I can’t even. She is growing more mild-mannered and calm and sweet, and she tolerates Arthur-snuggles, for which I am especially fond of her. She remains in the middle of the duck cuddle pile, and I get it, because I’d always want to be next to her too.
The rawr
Kelpie is so funny. She remains pretty awkward on her feet. Like, she’s fine, but she just looks a bit out of place all the time. She’s the last to come and eat, the last to go lay down, and in general hangs back with a “WTF” expression on her face like she isn’t sure this is real life or what she’s supposed to do with it. Maybe in a very recent past life, she was a clump of clover and life just straight up doesn’t make sense.
She is very interested in the thermometer in her brooder and continually pecks it down with her bill. I don’t know if she’s hoping it’s food or if it’s her mortal enemy or if this is a game she plays and she and thermometer are best buds.
Obviously I love her madly and she is perfection.
She’s only been swimming once so far and it was very funny. I still think she might be a great swimmer.
Observations on cuddling
All the ducks peep at me when I pick them up, but I’ve noticed that if I hold them to my chest and kind of trap/snuggle their heads, they calm. Do they think I’m about to eat them, or is this actually a comforting pose? I don’t know.
Chocolate Chip will put up with this kind of cuddle for about 20 seconds. Blue, about 30 seconds, but Kelpie lets me hold her like this kind of as long as I want to. My sweet little clover clump.
I REALLY HOPE THIS MEANS SHE LOVES ME.
So sweet. The simple joys in life are the best.
